Here are some tips and hints for those who are interested in beginning a yoga practice but are unsure of how to get started.

Just show up!

Many people ask if they should take a private lesson before coming to a public class so they will be familiar with the poses. There are many, many poses and the best way to learn is to come to class on a regular basis. Twice a week is good to begin with. Although you may feel a little bit lost at first we guarantee that you will pick things up very quickly. We recommend you show up ten to fifteen minutes before scheduled class time. Unlike gym classes you cannot pop in and out whenever you wish and we do start class on time. If you are late it will be disruptive to the class. If you do need to leave early for some reason please inform the teacher ahead of time.

What should I wear?

Be sure to wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move in all directions. If your clothing is too loose or baggy it will get in your way and also prevent the teacher from being able to see if you are in proper alignment. We do practice in bare feet so be prepared for that. Socks are not allowed during practice as they do not provide enough traction and could cause you to slip on your mat.

Do I need to buy a mat?

We provide mats and other yoga props free of charge. If you decide that yoga is something you would like to continue you will most likely want to buy your own mat in time.

Which class should I take?

If you are reasonably fit and do not have any chronic injuries or other physical issues we recommend starting with our Beginner level classes. If you are in poor health, have had recent surgery, are pregnant or have some other chronic physical complaint we recommend starting with our Gentle class. If you decide you need more of a physical challenge you can always try a more physically vigorous class later.
